(144)Johannes Menge (1788-1852) became known as the "father of Australian rock science". He was acquainted with George Fife Angas and was encouraged by him to go to southern Australia as an employee of the "South Australian Company". He explored widely and was particularly fond of the Barossa Valley, which he called "New Silesia".
(145)Captain Charles Sturt (1795-1869) After transporting prisoners to New South Wales in 1827, he reached Sydney in 1827 and was appointed military secretary to the governor and major in the garrison brigade.
(146)Johann Friedrich Krummnow (1811-1880) was a German settler, preacher and missionary in Australia. He is considered one of the co-founders of the Lobethal community in South Australia and the founder of the Herrnhut community near the town of Penshurst in the southeastern state of Victoria.
(147)Carl Theodor Körner (1791-1813) was a German writer who became a national leader in the 19th and 20th centuries because of his patriotic poems.
(149)Southern Cross was, according to Edward John Eyre's records, a hotel in Adelaide where he and Charles Sturt spent a pleasant night after being warmly received by the Hindmarsh daughters, despite their "bush clothes", on August 28th, 1838. (see book list #4, page 51)

(151)William Calton arrived in Adelaide with his wife Elizabeth née Blackler and three children on board the "Duchess of Northumberland" on November 19, 1839.
(153)Lieutenant John Walker (1796-1855) joined the Royal Navy in 1806 at the age of about 10, served on the "Swallow sloop" (1806) and from 1809 on the "HMS Norge" and left the Royal Navy in 1815. John and Theresa Walker left Tasmania after their marriage in 1838 and built a farm on the River Torrens. The town of "Walkerville" was named after him.
